The Purple Experience

I always thought my first post about Prince would either be about the amazing time that I had at one of his concerts or me discussing how great of one of his albums is. I always wanted to talk about my experience at one of his shows on my blog so that maybe one day he would retweet it on Twitter like I had seen him do for others. I never thought the news I heard yesterday would be what my first Prince related post would be about. I never thought this was even possible, and I still don't actually think that it's true. Prince is immortal, so he couldn't possibly do anything as human as dying, right?

Over the past 4 years, I've became a huge Prince fan. During that time he has became my favorite musician/artist of all time (and I think he's the best ever period). I've listened to his music almost every single day over that time span. My friends have probably gotten tired of me trying to force Prince's music on them, but I didn't care, in my mind I was looking out for them. Regardless what was going on in my life I could always find a Prince song that could relate to what I was going through from day to day. Through all of the good times (relationship, graduating from college, traveling) and bad times (break up, down days, feeling lost), Prince has been the soundtrack to my life these past few years.

I started my Prince journey by first listening to the Purple Rain soundtrack. This album quickly became one of my all time favorites before finally settling in as my favorite (and I think the best ever) album. With "Let's Go Crazy" as the first song you hear and "Purple Rain" (the best song ever recorded) being the closer, you couldn't really go wrong with that as an introduction to Prince. The soundtrack was a combination of rock, funk, soul, and gospel all rolled into one. That was only the beginning of my Prince journey. After that, I decided to start collecting all of Prince's albums.

I wanted to have all of his 80s albums first. So I bought Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Around the World in a Day, Parade, Sign 'O' the Times, Lovesexy, and the Batman soundtrack. Each one of these albums is not like any of the others. Just on Dirty Mind, for example, within a 4 song sequence ("Gotta Broken Heart Again", "Uptown", "Head", and "Sister") Prince described a heart break, a utopian place, giving someone else's bride oral sex on her wedding day, and incest, and it was all great. I mean who could even pull such a transition off? Prince that's who. Sign 'O' the Times, (which I think is Prince's second best album) is a show of the man's versatility. A double disc album with absolutely no filler on it. Just listen to that album and some of the lyrical themes... fucking genius man.

It's hard to believe that in a 10 year span he completed all of those albums, plus two movies, all while also working on other artist's material, and touring too, but he did it. Prince's output this decade is the greatest run we've ever seen in music, with Stevie Wonder's 70s run being a close second to me. So after I had all of his 80s material, I decided to buy the rest of his catalog. That took a long time because there is so many albums, but I did accomplish it.

(there are a few side projects that I'm still working on getting)

By listening to all of these albums, I grew to appreciate the man's artistry, creativity, musicianship, and his genius. He was always willing to try new genres of music, but alway kept it funky. Most (if not all) of his albums are all written, produced, arranged, and performed by him, just him, no one else. Everyone knows how great he is as a guitar player (the best in my opinion), but he was also a phenomenal bass player, pianist, and drummer. He could play almost any instrument. It's crazy to think that just about every sound you hear on a Prince album is him. He was a true "one man band", I mean, just check out the credits on his albums.

Prince was even better as a performer. Luckily I got to see him one time with his backing band, 3rdEyeGirl, last year in DC. I went to the concert with my mother, it's an experience I'll never forget and I don't think she will either.  It was in a nice intimate venue and my seat had been upgraded to the 3rd row because they had put a camera in my original seat. So I was literally just a few feet away from him. It didn't even feel like a concert really, it was more of a party. Just a bunch of people dancing around, enjoying one of music's treasures putting on a phenomenal show. He's one of those artist that you just feel when you see them in person, like you're in awe to be even in their presence. Not many artists are like that based on my concert experiences, but he is definitely one of them. He composed a great set list and even covered a few songs by other artists. One of my favorite moments of that show, was when him and the band were playing Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music." One time when the crowd was singing the part "play that funky music white boy", Prince responded with "who you calling white boy" hahahaha, I couldn't help but laugh while I was dancing. I was excited that I got to see "Purple Rain" played in person, which is the song I've always wanted to see performed live. I told people that if I ever saw it live that I would probably cry (I teared up a little bit). Now when I hear that song I'm sure I'll cry every time.

I wish I could have seen him in concert a couple more times because from what I've read, no two concerts were the same. I wanted to see his Piano & a Microphone tour but I was waiting for a stop closer to me. My ultimate dream was to go see him at Paisley Park, but I kept putting it off because I knew he would be around forever and that the right time would come. I will always regret not making that trip to Minneapolis.

Prince's music always took me somewhere, whether it was to another world, the dance floor, church, or the bedroom, I always felt transported to another place. Whether it was dancing while I cleaned my room, acting like I was Prince performing on stage, laying in my bed thinking about past relationships, putting some of his sexier songs to good use (if you know what I mean), or driving home late at night with Purple Rain blasting through the speakers (it's really the best song to listen to when you're on the road by yourself late at night), I always had some type of emotional or physical reaction to every song. That's what great music does to you, it makes you feel something. But now, listening to his music now will feel different than it did to me before. Now with every listen I'll be thinking of him not being here with us anymore, missing the artist that gave me so much happiness. I'm sure when I wake up in the morning I'll have a Prince song stuck in my head like I have numerous times over the past few years and I'll have to listen to it on my way to work. It just won't be the same for me, knowing that Prince is not somewhere performing or in a studio writing and recording another great song. A little bit of me and the love I have for music has gone.

Becoming a Prince fan was one of the best decisions I've ever made, and I will forever listen to his music.  I want to find a woman that makes me feel how he did when he made "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", when I get married I want my first dance to be to "Adore" and before I die the last song I want to hear is "Purple Rain". When I have kids I will make sure that they listen to Prince's music and become a fan much earlier in their life than when I did. I will always try to get people to listen to his music, it'll be my way of paying him back for all he's done for me.

I'm thankful for all of the blessings you placed upon this planet while you were here Prince. I know the next place you ascend to you will also have them bathing in the purple rain. You'll forever be the baddest motherfucker that ever walked this Earth.

NBA Award Picks

Most Valuable Player - Steph Curry
Let's see, 73-9 team record, 402 made 3 pointers (NBA record by a whole lot), 30-5-7 stat line (points-rebounds-assists), 50-40-90 club, lead the league in steal per game (2.1), of course he's the MVP. I'm not even a Steph fan and there is no one even close to beating him out for his second straight MVP. Just an incredible season by this man, in the discussion for the best season ever. This one has to be unanimous.

Rookie of the Year - Karl-Anthony Towns
Another run away award winner. KAT might be one of the 20 best players in the league right now after his rookie season. Averaged 18-10 as a rookie and every night made a few plays that you wouldn't believe. The Timberwolves have a bright future with him and last year's winner of this award, Andrew Wiggins. KAT is only going to get better, I expect him to be a top 10 player within the next 2 years.

Defensive Player of the Year - Kawhi Leonard
I swear I made this pick before the announcement today. Kawhi is the best defender in the league with respect to Draymond Green. Just watch him when the Spurs are on defense, all of the things he is constantly taking away and don't even think about throwing a bad pass his way because it's stolen. I would have been fine with Draymond winning the award because what he does for the Warriors is great but, I feel like Kawhi is always guarding the other teams best perimeter player so he gets the nod to me. Oh and the Spurs had the best defense in the league too... he kinda helped.

6th Man of the Year - Andre Iguodala
No clear cut winner for this award, Enes Kanter is also a worthy recipient but he absolutely plays 0 defense so I'm going with Iggy here. Great defender, leads the second team, can doing every really well even though he did miss a lot of games, the Warriors deserve as many awards as they can.

Most Improved Player - CJ McCollum
McCollum had a great year on a team that wasn't expected to do much. He was a great compliment to Dame Lillard and helped this team make the playoffs. 21 ppg isn't bad for a guy that only started 3 games the year before. This award is kinda weird because couldn't Steph technically be the most improved player I mean he did make a big improvement from his MVP season last year. NBA needs to have guidelines for this award.

Coach of the Year - Terry Stotts
Under normal circumstances this award would have gone to Steve Kerr since his team set the record for best record but having Luke Walton coach a large piece of the season takes away from his candidacy. Gregg Popovich is the best coach in the league and had the best season he's ever had as a coach with 67 wins, but he has a great team as they were expected to be. I like to give this award to a coach who's team exceeded expectations. Terry Stotts' Portland Trailblazers did just that. They lost 4 starters from last year and still got the 5th seed in the west this year. I didn't even expect this team to win 30 games this year. Stotts gets the award from me.

NBA Playoff First Round Predictions

Eastern Conference:

1 Cavaliers vs 8 Pistons - Cavs in 4
Playoff LeBron is upon us and I really don't see the Pistons having a chance in this series, they might be able to sneak out one win.

2 Raptors vs 7 Pacers - Raptors in 6
I'm not big on the Raptors but they'll definitely advance against this Pacers team. Pacers will be a tough out though but I think the Raptors backcourt of Lowry & Derozan will be too much.

3 Heat vs 6 Hornets - Heat in 7
Now this might be the best series of the entire first round. The Heat have a good mix of young and old players with Dwyane Wade leading the charge. I'm taking the experience of the Heat over the Hornets but Charlotte will definitely put up a fight and it will not be a very pretty series scoring wise.

4 Hawks vs 5 Celtics - Celtics in 7
This also has the makings of a great first round series. I'm taking the Celtics here because of Brad Stevens. The Hawks combo of Paul Millsap & Al Horford will be a problem and they could very well win the series. This is the one most likely to go 7 for me.

Western Conference:

1 Warriors vs 8 Rockets - Warriors in 4
73-9, what a hell of an accomplishment, I never thought the 72-10 record by the Bulls would ever be broken but it has. Warriors definitely will not slip up here especially with the back to back MVP Steph Curry coming off one of the greatest seasons of all time. Rockets could win a game if Harden just completely goes off, but I don't see it happening.

2 Spurs vs 7 Grizzlies - Spurs in 4
Sorry Grizz, but your whole team is hurt. This is a guaranteed lock of a sweep right here. Spurs are just too good and too deep. They'll want their rest before the tough challenge in the next round.

3 Thunder vs 6 Mavericks - Thunder in 6
Now, I'm giving the Mavs 2 games here because of two things. One, Rick Carlisle is one of the top 5 coaches in the league and he'll at least win them one game because he's a far superior coach than Billy Donovan, and two the Thunder have had problems closing out games, I anticipate that rearing it's ugly head in one game. But overall KD and Westbrook are just too much for this Mavs team to overcome.

4 Clippers vs 5 Blazers - Clippers in 6
Honestly I didn't even think the Blazers would make the playoffs, much less the 5th seed in the west. Great coaching job by Terry Stotts and Dame Lillard along with CJ McCollum became a very solid back court this season. I still give the edge to the Clippers to win in 6, I wouldn't be surprised if this did go 7 though. Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and Deandre Jordan really have a lot on them this postseason to make a push to the Western Conference Finals (which won't happen because... you know.. Warriors) and it could be the last time we see those 3 paired together if (when) they fail to do so.

One last thing, man was that a perfect way to go out for Kobe (given the circumstances). I would have been happy with a 30 point game, but 60! I didn't even think he had that in him anymore. I know it took 50 shots to do so, but he did make 44% of his shots (close to his career average). He would have been more efficient if he didn't take so many 3s (that's the story of the entire season really) but I understand with the old legs you don't have it in you to take it to the basket every time. People will ultimately forget about the number of shots he took and just remember that in his last game he scored 60 points. Now it also helps that the Jazz had nothing to play for after finding out they were eliminated from playoff contention. He definitely left everything he had on the court last night, he gave the game of basketball everything he could, all the way to the end. All in all, it was a unforgettable night, with all of the tributes, the stars in attendance, and all of the festivities going on around Staples Center and of course his performance. After spending 20 years in Los Angeles, it's only right that he had a Hollywood ending. I will never forget what happened in the final game Kobe Bryant's great career.

My Life As A Kobe Fan

Kobe Bean Bryant has been a part of my life since I was 8 years old, and over the past 17 years, no other athlete, musician, or celebrity has had as much of an impact on my life as him. From the minute I started following the NBA and the Lakers, Kobe has always been there and to think that it's actually coming to an end is unbelievable. See Kobe for me has always been more than just a basketball player; he's been an entertainer, a superhero, a god to me. He is my Michael Jordan. I always believed that Kobe was immortal and could do anything, which is silly because he’s only human. When I played basketball, I tried to play like Kobe (not very successfully),  and I wanted to be just like him growing up as a kid. I've always enjoyed reading articles about Kobe, watching his interviews, and seeing what other players thought about him, anything I could consume to learn more about him. I wanted to know as much information about him so that I could understand the person that was wearing that #24 (or #8) Lakers jersey. This has always helped me appreciate Kobe more as a player. Whether it was reading about his workout habits, his studying of past players, the psycho competitiveness,  or his determination to be the best, I always came away inspired. That’s what you want your role models to be right? an inspiration. Learning about how much time and effort he puts in to get ready for the games that I watched was really motivating for me. To see all of the injuries and obstacles that he has had to over come in his 20 year career and to still be willing to go out and perform is just incredible.

Over the years, Kobe has provided me with tons of joyful memories from watching him play basketball that will be with me forever. Through the good times and the bad times, I've always supported Kobe 100%. The good times, which include the 5 championships (2010 is my favorite), the numerous game winning shots, the great performances, and the bad times, the sexual assault case, the aftermath of the Shaq trade, the past few injury ruined seasons, my faith in him never waivered.

Seeing Kobe struggle these last few years has been tough, especially with the three season ending injuries that he sustained. When the Lakers acquired Steve Nash & Dwight Howard I told myself that I was going to watch every single game and I almost accomplished that thanks to a few illegal streaming sites (Sorry NBA! I made it up this year though!). I watched almost all of the final healthy season that Kobe had and it was incredible to see despite the failure that is usually associated with it. To see someone push himself to the limit and sometimes beyond it so that the team would make the playoffs was unbelievable (I even bet my beard that we would make the playoffs after the bad start). When the Achilles injury happened, there was no doubt in my mind that Kobe would come back and be the great Kobe that I had seen forever. To see him walk back on the floor and knock down those two free throws against the Warriors then walk off of the court all with a torn Achilles is something I will never forget.

Which reminds me of first time I ever went to go see Kobe play in person. It was Valentines Day 2011 (my girlfriend at the time knew how much I loved Kobe and the Lakers so she understood me not spending that day with her), when I arrived in Charlotte, it was reported that Kobe was dealing with an illness and might not play. Now for someone who's traveled from 5 hours away to come see him play I would have been disappointed if he didn’t play. But of course Kobe played, and I like to tell myself that he played that night because he thought that someone like me was in the crowd that came just to see him, and maybe some of that is true. Despite seeing the Lakers lose to the Bobcats (remember them?) I was just happy to see my favorite player play in person. Kobe fought through his illness and played because he knew the responsibility of being a superstar in the NBA. That is one of the lasting impressions that I will always have about watching Kobe play is that I never felt cheated, I knew that he was giving all he had every time regardless of how he physically felt.

I wish I could have seen Kobe play at his peak in person but I was much too young then to buy my own tickets. I should have tried to talk my parents into getting me tickets so that I could go see him play in DC the one time every season that they played there. Luckily, I got to attend 10 games in his last 5 years in the league and all of the money I spent to do so was well worth it (even though I only saw 3 wins out of those 10 games but that’s fine).

This season, his 20th and final one, I was fortunately able to attend 5 games. As soon as he announced he was retiring I made it my goal to go see my favorite player as many times as I possibly could. I was glad that every game I went to, his body allowed him to play those nights. At each game I attended this season, the love and appreciation that Kobe received from the fans (both home and away) was really tremendous. Watching all of the tributes from teams and players around the league has been great. It just shows the impact and influence that he has had on the league, it's players, and fans.

With his legendary career finally coming to an end tonight I can’t imagine an NBA without him. I wish Kobe could have ended his career with the Lakers being a title contender and chasing his 6th ring with a deep playoff run for one last time. But maybe it was better for it to happen this way so that he could truly enjoy a farewell tour. It’s going to be tough for me to watch his final game tonight, I might just cry when it's over. After the final buzzer sounds, a little bit of my love for the game of basketball will walk off the court with Kobe when the game is finished.

There is more that I could add about how he has affected my life but I don't really know how to put it into words, so I guess I'll just end with this...

Thank You Kobe... For Everything
